First Mental Footings

FIRST FOOTINGS – An ancient Scottish tradition where a person deliberately walks out their door crossing right foot first for good luck in the coming year.
Mine first footing was not over the lentil of my door, but out of Hospital. Not for a dram nor a morsel, but for returning to what was left of my life.
For the better part of 2018, I was ill. Very ill. An illness 50 years in the making, finally culminating with me resigning my position with a respected firm going home and going to bed and not moving, losing 20 lb. off my frame and feeling like nothing was worth living & life was hopeless.
Diagnosis - Serotonin imbalance in my brain. Treatment – Medication, for the rest of my life; and the support of family and friends.
As a result, today feels like New Year’s Eve. A sense of loss for what was and bright hope for the year. With this post, I am re-taking my first footing again. Happy New Year.
